Our Mission: To Help Orphans and Vulnerable Children

WIKS-USA, Inc. is dedicated to the success of orphans and other vulnerable children (OVCs) in rural Kenya, by providing financial and technical assistance for their education, shelter and emotional support at the Nambale Magnet School

WIKS-USA, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization, incorporated in Connecticut in 2009.  It was formed by Americans who had developed a close personal relationship with Reverend Evalyn Wakhusama, the founder of the Nambale Magnet School (NMS), during her time in the United States when she was studying at the Yale Divinity School.

The WIKS-USA founders were inspired by Rev. Wakhusama’s vision to create an educational institution to promote quality educational experiences for desperately poor children in her home region of western Kenya where they would mix seamlessly with paying students. This model was not and still is not common in Kenya and its success is a tribute to Evalyn’s inspired vision to break down barriers of gender and class.   

Initially, the focus was on those orphaned or otherwise rendered vulnerable by the AIDS pandemic. Fortunately, the AIDS pandemic has eased in western Kenya but grinding poverty still plagues the region, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic which has added to the prevailing public health and economic challenges.

In the early years, WIKS-USA's financial support was vital to enable NMS to launch. This included construction, operations, maintenance, and capital expansion. Once the main building phase was completed, WIKS-USA support shifted to the current model and focus on supporting OVCs.  We anticipate that this will continue to be our organization's primary mission in the foreseeable future.
